I love window light. I am pretty sure this isn’t the first time I have said that here on the blog. I use the light coming in my windows to create photos ALL THE TIME. I can’t tell you how many folders on my computer are named “So and So by the Window!” I should probably count. I am guessing you’d laugh.
One of the reasons I love window light so much, is that it has many different “looks.” It can be flat and soft or directional and dramatic. Today’s post is all about the dramatic light! Dramatic window lighting is created by placing your window to the side of your subject. It doesn’t have to be EXACTLY to the side–just approximately. This type of lighting highlights the shape and form of your subject. It also gives the photograph a dramatic mood.
The other day, while my son was eating his lunch, he was being cute and silly. He eats his lunch by the window and I noticed the pretty light and grabbed my camera. These photos are good examples of the dramatic window light I love.
Also, my digital SLR Photography Classes start next week. I am not accepting any more registrations for the 1-day class. However, If you are interested in the 4-week class, there is still room. I’d love to help you learn how to use your camera better. You can register for the classes by going to my Photography Class site.

I don’t have a DSLR camera, but I have tried to follow this advice eversince you gave it on your blog about 2 years ago. It truly makes a difference! I follow your example of avoiding the “flash of death” and using window light instead. SO SO much better! I love your photography tips!
